MIPDOC UNVEILS CONFERENCE PROGRAMME RICH WITH GLOBAL CONTENT FOR 2020
WORLD PREMIERE OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S 
“TRAFFICKED WITH MARIANA VAN ZELLER” 

Paris, 21 February 2020 MIPDoc today unveils a conference line up featuring prestigious exclusive content from around the world for its 2020 edition which will take place on 28-29 March 2020 in a new venue at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
 
Alongside the conference programme, MIPDoc features the world’s largest digital screenings library for factual content, as well as high-level matchmaking events and a dedicated co-production marketplace for international producers, buyers, commissioners and distributors.
 
As the largest annual gathering of the global factual community, MIPDoc provides a unique launchpad for premium international content and this year features:

A WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING PRESENTED BY DISNEY MEDIA DISTRIBUTION

 
Armed with National Geographic’s trademark inside access TRAFFICKED, explores the complex and often dangerous inner workings of the global black market underworld. Each investigation is led by Peabody and duPont Award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller on a mission to see the 360-degree view of the trafficking world from the point of view of the smugglers, law enforcement and those caught in the crossfire. As she meets the willing players and unwitting individuals who make, buy, sell and move goods, services and ideas, Mariana attempts — with characteristic boldness and empathy — to unearth the geopolitical circumstances and context that create the world’s multitrillion-dollar shadow economy.
 
Mariana van Zeller is an award-winning correspondent and investigative journalist. Her 2016 Fusion investigation “Death by Fentanyl,” which tracked the pharmaceutical and clandestine sources of the deadly opioid was recently honored with a DuPont Award.  For her report “Rape on the Reservation,” which examined the increased incidence of rape and sexual violence on American Indian reservations, she received the prestigious Livingston Award for Young Journalists.  And her documentary on prescription drug abuse and pill trafficking, “The OxyContin Express,” was honored with a Peabody Award, a Television Academy Honor and an Emmy nomination.
 
The Screening will be followed by the MIPDoc and MIPFormats Wrap Party at the Majestic hotel, sponsored by Disney Media Distribution.
 
  

A WORLD EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW OF NEILL BLOMKAMP’S COLLABORATION
WITH OTAGO PRODUCTIONS

 
Academy-award nominated director, producer, screenwriter and animator Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”, “Elysium”) will present an exclusive preview of his new documentary, currently shooting in South Africa, followed by a creative conversation on stage. 
 
After the victory against apartheid in South Africa, a new xenophobia has emerged from a backdrop of extreme poverty which sees black communities turning against each other. “Makwerekwere, An African Tragedy” confronts this violent expression of intolerance which is impacting the lives of many Africans caught in the turmoil of a complex and dee- rooted crisis.
 
“MAKWEREKWERE, AN AFRICAN TRAGEDY” is presented by Oats Docs, French-Canadian company, created by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”, “Elysium”) and French production company Otago Productions.   
 
 

MIPDOC KEYNOTE SHOWCASES

 
MIPDoc’s Keynote Showcases provide an unrivalled opportunity for buyers to hear directly from high profile non-scripted content creators as they outline their strategic ambitions and upcoming projects. This year’s line-up features:
 

  • KATE WARD, VICE STUDIOS 
    Kate Ward, President of VICE Studios, will lay out her vision for the global production business and share her thoughts on how being part of a global network can fuel creativity. 
  • TERRANOA
    Independent distributor, Terranoa, marks its 20th anniversary this year with a MIPDoc showcase unveiling an upcoming programming slate that includes true crime documentary series, “Moochie”. This six-part series follows the story as events unfold from the point of arrest to the jury’s final verdict as a team of public defense attorneys leads the investigation and untangles the knots of this sprawling case.

  
Additionally, a series of Content Strategy sessions will feature key content executives from companies like DISCOVERY, DOCU BAY, HOOQ, VIACOMCBS, RED ARROW sharing their acquisition and commissioning strategies, allowing producers and distributors to get a sense of what the market currently needs, and prepare their pitches accordingly.
 
This year MIPDoc will move into the Palais des Festivals in Cannes from the previously scheduled Martinez Hotel, due to unforeseen renovation works in the ballroom at the Martinez Hotel.
 
The venue move accelerates the anticipated timetable which was to which was to move MIPDOC into the Palais in 2021, bringing the unscripted community under one roof as part of the transformation of MIPTV and creating a unified market experience for the unscripted production, distribution and buyer communities the weekend leading into MIPTV.
